BEIJING (July 24, 2025) — Today the European Union and China released a joint climate statement during a high-level summit in Beijing marking 50 years of diplomatic relations. The announcement included a commitment from both sides to strengthen emissions reduction efforts and submit updated national climate plans ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil.
Following is a statement from David Waskow, International Climate Director, World Resources Institute:
“This joint statement from China and the European Union sends an important signal that climate cooperation can still rise above geopolitical tensions. Stronger climate leadership from these two major emitters is critically needed to rekindle global momentum after the U.S. stepped away from the Paris Agreement again.
“Of course, with the 1.5°C goal in grave jeopardy, the question is how the EU and China’s forthcoming climate commitments will measure up against what science demands. Both have a chance to meet the bar set by the International Court of Justice, which emphasized that climate commitments should reflect their highest ambition possible."
