Participate and win one of 10 laptops
The Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) is organizing an environmental competition for Arab schools in collaboration with Al-Bia Wal-Tanmia magazine. The subject of the competition is to create an environmental page on Facebook.
The contest is open to intermediate and secondary schools in all Arab countries, and it aims at creating an environmental page for the school on Facebook, as a tool for the implementation of activities and the use of information included in the handbook "Environment in Schools", published by AFED as part of its comprehensive environmental education program. The handbook is available in hard copy and as an electronic copy on

Conditions
- Each school can create only one page on Facebook.
- The common name for all pages should include the phrase AfedEcoschool in addition to the name of the school. For example: AfedEcoschool-BeirutHighSchool.
- Entries should be on behalf of the school and with the approval of the administration.
- The (About) section on the page should include information on the school and the participating team.
- The page should be managed by one or two students and supervised by a teacher. The team can include an unspecified number of students from all grades.
- Each page must include a link to the sites of the Arab Forum for Environment and Development, Al-Bia Wal-Tanmia magazine and the "Environment in Schools" handbook:

- The students should document daily observations on the progress of the page and the activities that are being done to attract followers and promote environmental concepts and initiatives.
- Each school will present a final report not exceeding four A4 pages via e-mail to:[email protected], not later than 15 June 2013.
The report should include:
- The school's information (school name, address, phone, fax, e-mail, website, name(s) of the student(s) managing the page, names of the students participating in the competition and which grade they're in), name of the supervising teacher.
- Steps that were undertaken to promote the page.
- Activities and news that attracted the largest number of comments and gained the appreciation of the followers.
- Details of followers (weekly/monthly increase leading up to the final number).

Facebook page evaluation criteria
- Activate the content of the page by referencing the "Environment in Schools" websitewww.afed-ecoschool.org to make use of the information and ideas and activities it includes and applying them in an innovative way.
- Content and quality of activities.
- Page design and update.
- Number of followers and feedback through comments, likes and shares.
- That the page is still active on Facebook when the results are announced on 14 October 2013.
Ideas to activate the page
Daily or weekly environmental competition - Environmental activity in the school, such as on the occasion of a celebration Day (National Environment Day, World Environment Day, National Day of Reserves, World Forestry Day, World Water Day, World Health Day, World Heritage Day, World Biodiversity Day, Earth Day, World Book Day ...) a list of these days is available in the AFED Education Handbook - Produce poster(s) on a particular topic - Create an environmental cartoon character - Produce an environmental wall chart/bulletin - Produce short documentaries (3-5 minutes) - Publish environmental news and articles - Champion a particular environmental issue. Awards
- 10 laptops for ten winning schools.
- Certificates for participating schools from AFED and Al-Bia Wal-Tanmia.
Results will be announced on the occasion of Arab Environment Day on 14 October.
Environment in Schools
The "Environment in Schools" handbook includes information and various environmental activities, and provides detailed guidance on the concept of environmental education and the establishment of environmental clubs in schools. The handbook includes 11 chapters that showcase key environmental issues which are: air pollution, climate change, energy, water, seas, biodiversity, desertification, agriculture, waste management, noise, sustainable development. It also includes environmental tests and selected texts on environmental topics. Each topic is supported by audio-visual materials such as documentaries, songs, plays and environmental posters that can be downloaded for use in schools.
